Daphne

Entering into nature the girl became tree,

 refused divinity, the blaze of light.
   Her roots reached downward through the earth

     to primal darkness, solid stone.

      Yet she could not escape the sun god,

        his light drenching her branches,

         or his friend the wind

           turning her leaves to song.
